In histology, bodies are broadly classified into the following categories: 1. Naturally occurring body - a mass of matter found anatomically or physiologically in organs and tissues 2. Foreign body - a mass or entity that has been introduced from an external source. In other words, any mass found in an organ or tissue in which it does not
Civatte bodies' are present in the lower part of the epidermis and are composed of net like amorphous masses. When present in the epidermis, these bodies are composed of waverly arranged fine filaments entangled with melanosomes, desmosomes and other organelles. Formation of Civatte bodies is thought to be due to basal cell liquefaction degeneration and hypergranulosis.

Necrotic keratinocytes can be observed in the basal layer of the epidermis and at the dermal-epidermal junction. Eosinophilic remnants of anucleate apoptotic basal cells may also be found in the dermis and are referred to as “colloid or civatte bodies”. Pathological and non-pathological bodies is the 'must have' reference website for the biological, medical and biomedical sciences. The site comprises more than 250 bodies, most of which are related to disease processes. These structures are universally known as Civatte bodies. Nonetheless, they were first described by Raymond Sabouraud in 1912. Even after Achille Civatte discussed and beautifully illustrated them a decade later, it took until the late 1960s for the term Civatte body to win acceptance.
Civatte disease - Synonym (s): poikiloderma of Civatte. poikiloderma of Civatte - reticulated pigmentation and telangiectasia of the sides of the cheeks and neck; common in middle-aged women. Abstract Eosinophilic apoptotic (necrotic) keratinocytes in the lower epidermis and at the dermoepidermal junction are a feature of many interface dermatoses but are most reliably found in lichen planus. These structures are universally known as Civatte bodies.

The mean age at diagnosis was 47.8 years for females and 61.7 years for males. Histological examination revealed an atrophic (62%), flattened (84%) epidermis with hyperkeratosis (92%) and occasional follicular plugging (34%). These structures are universally known as Civatte bodies. Nonetheless, they were first described by Raymond Sabouraud in 1912.
